Marsala - The Town of the Salt and the Wine
Marsala was founded by the survivors of Motya after the island city of Motya had been put to the sword by the Syracusans.
The Quiet Seaside town of Marsala was one of the main Carthaginian base in Sicily from which Carthage fought for supremacy over the island against Greece and Rome. Norwadays it's more readily associated tith the world-famous richly colored sweet wine named after the town. In 1773 a Brithish marchant, John Woodhouse happened upon Marsala and discovered  that the wine there was as good as the port the British imported from Portugal. In 1800 Marsala was exporting its wine all over the British Empire. One of  Sicily's foremost wine producers is the 150 years old Donna Fugata, open for tours in their Cantina.
