Discovering Palermo and its monuments - Interactive Map and Tips of Palermo Monuments
PALERMO
Palermo -  What a beautiful city...It should be known mostly for its history and its beauty but it's saddly famous for the Mafia and for the corruption. Before coming to Palermo be ready to see a city full of contrasts. People mostly are nice and friendly. Criminality (I mean the normal criminality) is not much more than some other European big European Cities. It's a noisy city (so if you need a relaxing vacation...Palermo is not the city for you) and the traffic is chaotic but the atmosphere is very familiar and it's easy that you'll feel very well accepted by the local people.

Palermo never rated a stop on anybody's Grand Tour of Europe. Yet fairly judged, Palermo's art treasures surpass those of Venice. Its architectural and natural beauty compare favorably to the sights of Florence and its history is older than Rome's.

Palermo is also the only one Italian City other than Rome and Venezia to win a place on the roster of history's great empire.

Palermo and Sicily (very rich and powerful in the past) have been ruined by the Politic, the awfull administration and the Mafia who is very well connected with the Politic.

Tha Mafia is something that you (as tourists) won't be able to see...so, don't go to Corleone to try to see the mafiosi cause you won't be able to see any ;o) The Mafia is a problem for the Palermitani (and Sicilian) but the Mafia of the Godfather doesn't exist anymore...do you remember the Godfather 3?...Yes...when the Godfather was "working" very hard to make his name respectable?...well...now it's happened..."he" got his target and the big Mafiose Families now are very respactable and they can lead the Sicilian, Italian and in some case even world Economy...The "low level" mafia is still alive but now they are just..."employees"

Ok...we are not here to talk about Mafia of course but to talk about what you (as tourist) are going to feel and see in Palermo.Palermo has 2.500 years of history anyway one of the oldest part of Palermo is the Kalsa (Arab age). You'll see a huge amount of historical building and Palazzi...some in good conditions and more in bad conditions but you'll like the feeling of authenticity you'll get. With the Billion Euros that Sicily got from the European Union, Sicily Sicily should be the best preserved place in the world but .... it's possible that most of all that monet didn't get the right direction.... The food....the food in Palermo (and Sicily) is really good and various. Please...don't think that we can only cook Pasta or Pizza ;o) Yes...we have Pasta cooked in hundreds different way...hundreds type ways to cook the meat and the fish and hundreds type of Cakes and desserts. With our photos and the Interactive Palermo monuments map we are trying to show you Palermo thru our eyes. We are not a commercial guide...everything here is totally free and we did it and we continue to do it, every day with all the passion we have

The Tourism in Palermo SHOULD be one of the main resources but...it seems it ìs not considered like that. This is really a shame cause Palermo has a lot to offer. Almost 3000 years of history but who manages the Tourism in Palermo looks like without any knowledge and experience. Inside the museums it looks like if they don't mind if ther are some tourists or not and sometimes they even decide to close a bit earlier. Palermo is great City but with too many contrasts...if you are ready to accept them as a part of the "Sicilianity"...you'll have a great vacation otherwise...choose another place.

Palermo - Fontana Pretoria

Palermo - Palazzo Abatellis - Entrance ticket 8€ - NEVER crowded. You'll see a lot of employees inside...maybe more employees than tourists but the museum is really nice.

Palermo - Church of Teatini. One of the most important Baroque churches in Palermo (with San Domenico and Casa Professa)

Palermo - Palazzo Comitini - The Entrance is Free. Most of the guidebooks don't write anything about it and when you go, the guides are curious to know how you discover it...cause there is no advertising. The Guided tours are every hour from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m.

Palermo - Martorana Church. Greek Bizantin Church

Palermo - Cathedral.

Palermo - Monreale Duomo. The most important in the world for Gold Mosaic Surface. More than 2 tons in gold!

Monreale the Chiostro. TOO expensive to visit it. Inside the Cathedral there is a gate with a man. You pay 2€ and you can visit the left side of the church plus you can go on the top of the church (from where we got this photo) and then you decide with a "preview" if the entrance fee is the right price. Anyway the walk on the top of the Church is really nice.

Palermo - Norman Palace and Cappella Palatina. If you stay more than 1 day in Palermo, try to go during the day you can visit the Cappella Palatina and a part of the Palazzo...cause some days you can just visit the Cappella Palatina. It ìs very beautiful. 10€ is  overpriced. The tours inside are just in Italian and the guides mostly are not very nice!!...if you don't want to spend this money, visit Monreale and Martorana Church.

The Ciambra (in Monreale) was the place where the people that built the Duomo used to sleep. It's really nice.

Palermo - San Giovanni degli Eremiti
Too expensive for what you got. The right
price should be 2€ but of course it's much more!

Palermo - Teatro Massimo. It's the 3rd biggest theatre in Europe. Really beautiful and impressive. Pity that the tours inside are not that great. 5€ for a 16 minute tour (mostly in Italian). You cannot take pictures and you can do almost nothing inside...luckly you can still breath ;o)
